The South Tyrol Museum of Nature is housed in the former official building of the Austrian Emperor Maximilian I. An exhibition area of 100 square metres shows the diversity of the South Tyrolean landscape, in particular the history of the formation of the Dolomites.
The castle is considered one of the landmarks of South Tyrol. It is located on the south-western edge of the town above the course of the River Adige. From the 10th century, the castle was owned by the prince-bishops of Trento. In the second half of the 15th century, under Duke Siegmund of Tyrol, it became one of the most magnificent castles in the country and henceforth bore the name "Sigmundskron" (Crown of Sigismund).
