Castle Tyrol

Merano | Tirolo

Castel Tirolo is the most historically important castle in South Tyrol. Its history dates back to the end of the 11th century. Since 2003, Castle Tyrol has been home to the South Tyrolean Cultural and Regional History Museum. The focus of the museum tour is the presentation of the history of the region from its beginnings to the present day.

The oldest architectural traces can be found in the ante-mural fortress: an archaeological excavation uncovered three churches dating from the 6th to the 11th century. In the southern palace, two Romanesque portals can be admired, while the two-storey St Pancras Chapel contains beautiful Gothic frescoes.

The alleged wedding chamber of Countess Margarethe of Tyrol, known as the ‘Maultasch’, is located in the so-called ‘Mushaus’. In the donjon, which was only completed after 1902, you can retrace the exciting history of South Tyrol in the 20th century in 20 stages. What was once the site of the service buildings now houses the temporary exhibitions.
