Neustift Abbey

Bressanone | Novacella

The Abbey of the Canons Regular of St. Augustine in Novacella was founded in 1142 by Bishop Hartmann of Brixen/Bressanone and over the centuries became one of the most salient spiritual centres of the old Tyrol. Today it encompasses works from different artistic periods, including architectural gems such as the Castel Sant'Angelo, located at the entrance to the monastery complex, the Baroque church and the Abbey Museum, which houses late-medieval paintings on wood and splendid examples of amanuensis art such as the ‘illuminated manuscripts’. The library of the Novacella Abbey is considered one of the most distinguished in the southern German-speaking area.
